Cooking García Márquez
Online Shared Max. 8 2 hours Spanish / English
The Colombian Caribbean, that inspiring territory where García Márquez found the magic of his stories, tastes of plantain and eggplant, of tropical fruits cooked in coconut and cane syrup, of old native Spanish and African kitchen legacies, that Gabo shouted proudly through the generous banquets that Fermina Daza served at her Villa at Manga and in the rhyming songs of the “dulceras” -Candy Artisans- that shouted in between pages pineapple sweets for your sweetie, coconut candy is dandy, brown-sugar loaf for your sugar in the warm and noisy Sweets Portal at Cartagena of Indias.
The flavors that the Syrian-Lebanese communities brought to the Caribbean dining rooms also impregnated his writings, a miscegenation that emanates from our pots, and that García Márquez seasoned with the nostalgia of his own experience. It was no longer him eating the patacones in his nights of sorrow at the public market at Getsemaní, it was Captain Diego Samaritano on board of the “New Fidelity” plowing the great Magdalena River.
If you have not read Garcia Márquez, get ready to discover him in the most delicious way. Be surprised by the way Gabo took his fascination for our cooking to the tables of his characters, whom he fed with the culinary Caribbean he never left…
What you'll live
Three passages extracted from “Love in the Time of Cholera” get transformed into recipes for you to cook García Márquez and the traditional gastronomy of the Colombian Caribbean through the flavors in his tales.
An intimate encounter where we’ll talk literature, Gabo’s personal gastronomic memories and the sceneries that inspired him. Join this celebration from home, it will play out to the soundtrack of vallenatos and Spanish-American songs he very much enjoyed.
Cook the flavors of magical realism in a three-course menu that will fill your stomach of Caribbean seasoning and literary love butterflies.
•Travel through the Colombian Caribbean with the good Samaritan Patacones. Your kitchen will have the aroma of fried green plantain… learn the proper technique to full crispiness and the secret formula for an authentic flavor.
•The Andalusian/Arabic influence we have deeply rooted in our Caribbean identity comes to life in a recipe Florentino Ariza christened for himself: the eggplants of love. Discover the ingredients in this mestizo dish and its metamorphosis in Fermina Daza’s palate.
•Sweeten your palate with the homage García Márquez’ pays to African Culture, a true Cartagena Bakery jewel we’ll prepare step by step.
Our classes are one-on-one cooking workshops, so you can always have your microphone on and ask as many questions and comments. We limit the class capacity to small groups to guarantee an intimate experience and encourage the conversation among all participants. It’s a social event!
